First Lady Nechama Rivlin, the wife of President Reuven Rivlin, underwent a single lung transplant today at Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikvah.
She is unconscious but in stable condition, President Rivlin tweeted.
The transplant took place after a long period of waiting. Nechama has been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for several years.
The operation was performed by cardiothoracic surgeon Prof. Dan Aravot, head of the cardiothoracic department at Beilinson. Nechama Rivlin’s personal pulmonologist, Prof. Mordechai Kramer, was also present.
The hospital said in a statement that if the transplant is successful, Nechama will be able to return to “a full life without dependence on an external oxygen supply.”
A lung became available after 19-year-old Yair Halbali drowned in Eilat. Several of his organs have been donated by his family.
Upon hearing the news, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that on behalf of all Israelis, he wishes Nechama Rivlin good health and long life.
