A four-year-old boy who had been abandoned by his father arrived on Tuesday at the Erez humanitarian crossing with Gaza. The boy received medical treatment in Israel, and when the time came to return home to Gaza, his father abandoned him with a stranger and chose to stay in Israel as an illegal alien.
Residing in Israel illegally is forbidden under the law. This is not the first time this has happened.
“To our sorrow, a number of times this month we have found abandoned children at the Erez Crossing who had entered Israel for medical treatment. The parents, who were supposed to accompany their children and provide them with a sense of security, chose to stay in Israel as illegal aliens and send their sons or daughters back to the Gaza Strip by themselves, without familiar faces to bring them home”, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said in a statement.
The Commander of the CLA (Foreign Relations Department) to Gaza, Colonel Eyad Sirhan, said:
“The phenomenon of children being abandoned at the Erez Crossing is unacceptable. As a father, it is impossible for me to understand how a parent could abandon his child and leave him or her in unfamiliar hands without worrying about their safety and security.
Residents of the Gaza Strip who violate the conditions of their permits and remain in Israel after they expire are breaking the law!
As a human being and as a father, I hope that this unacceptable phenomenon stops at once, and that residents of Gaza keep their children at the front of their minds”.
